artist-shaleahShaleah was born Shaleah Patterson on August 17, 1988 in the small town of Poughkeepsie, NY. even though she started singing at the age of three in church, she classifies herself as an R&B singer but tries to be versatile with her music. As quoted by Vocal Coach from MTV’s Making the Band 4, Ankh Ra “I can feel your greatness. You’ve got it and you have a beautiful voice.”

Shaleah was featured on Rocco Don Records’ most recent compilation album in April of 2007 titled “Poison Dart: The album”. Rocco Don Records is currently promoting her debut album which is self-titled “Shaleah”. Currently, there are advertisements on the radio, in magazines, online, and around the New York area.

A few accomplishments that Shaleah remains proud of to this day are performing on the World famous Apollo theater stage and being booked for shows with celebrities such as Jagged Edge and Donell Jones.

“The first time she auditioned for me, I could see that she was nervous yet determined. I was taken aback by her unique but soft and distinctive voice. And I believe her writing skills at such an early age are incredible.”

Shaleah Featured in Urban Magazine A&R Report

artist-shaleahOur female vocalist Shaleah is featured in Urban Magazine’s coveted A&R Report. Check out the interview in it’s entirety. http://www.urbanmag-online.com/archives/aandr-report/shaleah.html

We have featured several artist from all of the country in our coveted A&R Report. Little did we know that a few block from our home office in New York’s Power Kingdom aka Poughkeepsie, lived a remarkable singer / songwriter. Shaleah brings the full package. Here’s a chance for some of you A&R’s to make up for the last few one hit wonders. Read slowly.

How old are you? I’m 19! I’ll be 20 next month!! YAY!!

When did you start performing? Well, let’s see. I’ve been singing since I was three or four in my church choir called “The Holy Angels”. I loved to sing. I can even remember way back when I was about 8 or 9, and I just knew I could sing. Nobody could tell me I couldn’t. I always watched MTV as a child. I’d watch the videos on TV and always thought, “I want to be just like them. I want to be a performer.” Singing has been a love of mine since as long as I can remember. And now, it’s become a passion; a lifelong quest sort of! It’s become my life and I can’t really see myself doing anything except music! It wouldn’t feel right. The only thing that has really ever felt right to me was my music. It’s like a place I go during moments of my deepest pain and my greatest joy. Music is what I love and what I feel. When I wake up, there’s always a song in my head, and sometimes I sing aloud, and sometimes it just remains in my head. Sometimes I don’t even realize it. But yeah, Music is my safe place.

Name some of the artist who have inspired or influenced you? It’s a long list, but I’ll name a few. My first favorite artist was and still is Brandy. Ever since a friend of the family gave me a brandy tape, I would listen to it at night before I went to sleep. And her voice was just so soothing and pure, and it would just make me feel like I could do anything I wanted to. Her voice inspired me.  A few other artists that inspired me are Mariah Carey, Fantasia, Aaliyah, Monica, Mya, Toni Braxton, Tyrese, Usher, Beyonce, Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, Keyshia Cole, Lauryn Hill and a lot of others. Some old school artists that have influenced me are Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and a lot of others too. Too many to name. lol.

How would you describe your style? My style would best be described as Urban. And what that breaks down into is a variety of sub-categories which reminds me of one of my mother’s favorite recipes. My recipe for the Urban style is a little hint of Pop mixed with R&B and a little pint of soul. I would also describe Urban as my personal style and personality merged inside of my music to create a blended style which I can call my own.

What separates you from other artists? I think what separates me from other artists is my style. My music stands out from everyone else. I think my music is unique in its own way. First of all, I try to experiment with different producers to get a different sort of feel throughout the album. I wouldn’t want the entire album to sound the same. Also, what I think sets me apart from other artists is that I’m not like today’s R&B artists. The feel of my music is just different. It’s kind of like “feel good music” as opposed to club music.

Name some of the major artists you have performed with. Well I’ve only opened for one major act which was Jagged Edge. The boys are very nice and down to earth! It was a great show. Hopefully in the very near future, I will open or perform with artists that are on my “favorite list”. It would be a dream come true if I could perform with or even just open for Brandy (If she ever comes out with anything new). That would be the cherry on top a fantastic year.

Do you have any major offers on the table? I don’t have any major label offers but I do have a few Independent Majors who we are currently negotiating with. I wouldn’t want to jinx it or spoil it by telling all, so I’m going to just say that we are confident that we are on the right road and hopefully some doors will be opened up very soon.

What advice would you offer other aspiring authors? Keep on keeping on!!! NEVER EVER Give up!! It may take longer than expected to get where you want to be but it will be worth it when you do!! Reach for the stars. And don’t take no for an answer! Be persistent and be “Out there”. Because its better to be looked over than overlooked! Be you and network to the fullest. Get to know everyone you can who has the same interests in music as you do. And Pray!! God is the only one you need to succeed!!

Any shout outs? Yeah! I wanna shout out my record label Rocco Don Records! Rocco!! Thanks for believing in Me!! And everyone who contributed to the success of my first album!!! I would also like to thank the people out there who downloaded and purchased my album on iTunes, CD Baby and Dig Station!! Also thanks to all my fans and supporters on MySpace. And oh yeah, Thanks to GOD!
